How to Start a Podcast

Podcasting has become an increasingly popular way to share your thoughts, ideas, and stories with the world. We at AGPR ought to know: our PR AFTER HOURS podcast has been an industry favorite since 2020! We often hear from individuals and businesses wondering if podcasting is right for them. Well, there is a lot to cover, but to get you started, there are a few things you need to do to get started.

Here are the general steps on how to start your own podcast:

Choose a topic.

What do you want to talk about? Your podcast could be about anything, from current events to personal experiences.

Do your research.

Once you know what you want to talk about, it’s time to do some research. This will help you to develop your ideas and to come up with a unique perspective on your topic.

Create a plan.

What will your podcast look like? Will you have guests? Will you do interviews? Will you be solo? Once you have a plan, you can start to put together your episodes.

Record your episodes.

This is where you’ll actually create your podcast. You can record your episodes in a studio, or you can use a simple microphone and record them in your home.

Edit your episodes.

Once you have your episodes recorded, it’s time to edit them. This will help to make your podcast sound professional and polished.

Publish your episodes.

Once your episodes are edited, you can publish them on a podcast hosting platform. This will make them available for people to listen to.

Promote your podcast.

Once your podcast is published, you need to promote it. This will help people to find your podcast and to listen to it.

Starting a podcast is a lot of work, but it can be a rewarding experience. By following these steps, you can create a podcast that people will love to listen to.

Here are some additional tips for starting your podcast:

Choose the right equipment.

You’ll need a microphone, a recording device, and a way to edit your episodes.

Find a good hosting platform.

There are many different podcast hosting platforms available. Do some research to find one that’s right for you. We use Spotify for Podcasters. It’s easy to use and free.

Be consistent.

Try to release new episodes on a regular schedule. This will help to build a following for your podcast. We release our shows every Tuesday for two seasons per year. We take off a couple of months in the summer and post reruns. Don’t disappear once you build an audience!

Interact with your listeners.

Respond to comments and questions on social media. This will help you to build a relationship with your listeners.

Don’t give up.

Podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately. Just keep creating great content and promoting your podcast, and eventually, you’ll find success.
